Tomato (Latin Solanum lycopersicum) - plant of the genus Nightshade, family Solanaceae, annual or perennial herb. In our climate, tomatoes are naturally grown as annuals. At present, tomato is one of the most popular crops among agricultural enterprises that grow vegetables loved by the population on hundreds and thousands of hectares of fields or in heated greenhouses, and among amateur gardeners.
And not only in the southern regions, but also in those areas that, it seems, are not at all suitable for this thermophilic plant. This is due to the valuable nutritional and dietary properties of the tomato, its unique taste, as well as a wide variety of varieties, high responsiveness to the growing methods used. They are cultivated in open ground, under film shelters, in heated and unheated greenhouses, hotbeds, on balconies, loggias and even in rooms on windowsills.
Since tomato is a thermophilic crop, it needs an optimal temperature of 22 ... 25 ° C for normal development, and at temperatures below 10 ° C, pollen in flowers does not ripen, and the unfertilized ovary falls off.
Tomato does not tolerate high humidity, but loves a lot of water for fruit growth. Tomato plants are also demanding of light. With its lack, the development of plants is delayed, the leaves turn pale, the formed buds fall off, the stems are strongly elongated.
All the strengths and weaknesses of tomatoes have been well studied by our gardeners, so it is quite difficult to offer something new in growing tomatoes. But nevertheless, I suddenly had an interesting personal experience that I want to share with other readers of the magazine, especially, I'm sure it will interest those townspeople who love wildlife, but do not have their own plot. Maybe one of them will try to repeat this experience.
Last year, 2011, I bought a bag of tomato seeds. I put the pot with the planted plant on the windowsill. I have a large window, facing the south side. The tomato sprouted and further developed normally: it bloomed, ovaries appeared, the fruits formed and ripened. In the summer, I harvested a small crop of tomatoes. On this, it would seem, the "growing season" and should have ended. But after fruiting, I did not pull out the plant, since it was very picturesquely green on the window. So it remained standing on the windowsill. All tomato care consisted of infrequent watering.
And now summer is over, autumn has passed, winter has come. And my tomato costs itself green!
He even survived a shutdown of heating for several days. Then curiosity snapped me apart. Since he survived in such conditions, I will grow him until summer to see what happens?
And last April my tomato suddenly bloomed. And now he also got red tomatoes, which readers can see in my picture. It is noteworthy that during all this time it has hardly grown, only, as it seems, it has spread out a little in breadth. Now I already plan to leave it on the windowsill next year. Of course, I will approach its content more carefully, I will take care of it more carefully so that my perennial tomato will delight us with both its greens and its berries-tomatoes.

It is quite possible to grow your tomatoes without the use of chemical fertilizers. They are superbly replaced by mullein infusion and "green fertilizer", which is very simple to prepare, and can be used in the form of root dressings, and by spraying on the leaf.
It is quite possible to grow your tomatoes without the use of chemical fertilizers.
Already there is a small barrel in the sun, which I have filled with weeded grass. She added nettles from a nearby planting. I put a little - about a teaspoon per liter of water - old jam (honey can be used) to start the correct fermentation process and filled it to the brim with water. I covered it tightly with a lid - during fermentation, the smells from the barrel are not the most pleasant. If there is no lid, you can simply cover it with a black trash bag or plastic wrap, tying it with a string.
On our Youtube channel, you can see with your own eyes the process of preparing such a green fertilizer.
To this fertilizer, you can add another handful of superphosphate per 10 liters. Only it is better to do this when laying the grass - during the fermentation process, microorganisms decompose the chemical fertilizer into a form that is more natural for plants. You can read more about this phosphate fertilizer in the articles What is superphosphate and how to use it and How I was looking for real superphosphate, or Where is nitrogen in superphosphate from.
Our market will help you compare prices and choose superphosphate, where products from different online stores delivering across Russia are presented.
A couple of times a month is not bad sprinkle tomatoes over the leaves infusion of nettle. Here it is no longer necessary to ferment the grass, but simply pick up nettles from half a bucket, pour 10 liters of warm water over it. Insist for a day. For spraying, dilute the infusion in a proportion of 1 liter per bucket of water.
There is another trick that helps to speed up the ripening of tomatoes and improve their keeping quality: in late July or early August, you can feed them once with comfrey infusion.
Working on a plot of land, however small, is not easy. In addition to the fact that you constantly have to sow, weed, water, dig and do many more different operations, there is still a risk of losing the entire crop one not very fine day. Whether this is caused by hail or an invasion of pests - such a result will still sadden. But there is a way out! If you want to eat fresh vegetables, but do not want to work in the country, build a vegetable garden on the window.
It is desirable that the window is located on the east or south side of the house. Otherwise, the plants will suffer from a lack of light or heat, and you will have to go to tricks in order to compensate them for the conditions necessary for growth. It's also good if the width of the window sill allows you to put wide objects on it without the risk of dropping them immediately. Particular attention should be paid to the absence of gaps between the frames - when grown in winter, they can become a factor that prevents the maintenance of normal climatic indicators. If there is no way to use the window space, you can put the boxes next to each other, on a dais - but then you cannot do without backlighting. So, as you can see, the garden for the lazy also requires attention, albeit minimal.
Choosing what to plant
Ideal - special trays for balconies. But since there is no way to be puzzled by their acquisition, any dish will do. The only requirement is that for plants with a long rhizome, it should be deep, and for those in which the underground part develops in width - spacious. In any case, the height of the side cannot be less than 12 cm.
A few words about the soil
It is not necessary to buy expensive mixtures in bags. You can take ordinary soil and add sand, lime, peat, pine bark, wood ash to it yourself - depending on the preferences of each plant. An important point: make sure that the ingredients are free of worms and other animals, as well as harmful microorganisms. To do this, they can be steamed in the oven. In some cases, you can do without land altogether - for example, if you plan to forcing green onions. He feels great in water, only there should not be chlorine in it. Since our garden is for the lazy, we will not advise carrying liquid from a well, take it from the tap, but defend it.
First of all, it is worth sowing herbs, that is, dill and parsley. They are unpretentious and will always come in handy on the farm. Further - the already mentioned bow on a feather. You can experiment with radishes. Tomatoes and hot peppers will not be superfluous, especially since there are special mini-varieties. Lettuce lettuce will help diversify the menu. Sorrel is another great candidate for lazy people to settle in your garden.
As you can see, it is not necessary to have a whole garden and vegetable garden at your disposal. With your own hands, in a limited area inside an apartment, it is easy to create a small green oasis that will enrich your food with vitamins all year round.
Five days have passed since the first reportage, and now I have a long-awaited package with a gift from Search!
The box contains everything you need to create a small home garden: seeds, soil, seedling box, fertilizer, and even a set of tag tags with a small pencil. The seeds are carefully selected by specialists from the “Four Summers” series, designed specifically for growing on the balcony and windowsill, as well as seeds of microgreens and just greenery, all in exact accordance with the Starter Kit. It immediately became clear that the business would not be limited to one kitchen window sill.)))
The first step is to deal with microgreens. Because it grows for 7-14 days, then for constant consumption you just need a conveyor! These are the shoots on a simple napkin with water on the seventh day from the start of germination:
Ready to cut
Soak five types of microgreens at once.
I wash it several times and put it, as in the first reportage, into disposable plastic containers with a damp cloth at the bottom. And I send them for growing. Now it's the turn of the real vegetables. Selected for soaking and sowing City cucumber (I plan to 2 pcs.), Tomatoes Baby and Orange cap, Kuzya pepper (1 pc. Each). Without delay, we soak the seeds. I also sow three types of greens with dry seeds in the same cups: arugula Indau Dikovinka, Moscow Greenhouse salad and dill. Monstera seems to like this neighborhood, well, who would have turned on the backlight for 14 hours ?! Cherry tomatoes look very nice in jars. This is a great addition to the festive table. Fragrant and tasty, they can be served as a snack, used in the preparation of first and second courses, and even in baked goods. Ingredients: Cooking (preparation 30 min, cooking 20 min): 2. Wash the tomatoes and fill the jars with them. 3. Pour boiling water over the tomatoes, let stand for 5 minutes. Drain and prepare the marinade: add sugar, salt to the drained water, bring to a boil and pour the marinade over the tomatoes. Add vinegar and roll up the jars. Turn over and cover until cooled. Note to the hostess: use special lids with holes to drain boiling water and marinades. Pickled cherry tomatoes are ready for the winter.
Soaking for a few hours
New plants in the bottom row
I soak 3 pieces of each variety. After 2 days, the first roots appeared:
I sow the hatched and simply swollen seeds (pepper, of course, did not have time to hatch in such a short time) in ordinary half-liter cups for seedlings, using the soil from the set donated by Search, in a way familiar to any summer resident.
I supply all the cups with index tags, cover with plastic foil and put them in a warm place. This is the second kitchen sill now.
Cucumbers, tomatoes and arugula have already risen
Small shoots immediately cheer up, despite the weather outside the window.
Even such a small garden is a great pleasure! And the benefit, of course!
And as the last argument - "lunch from the windowsill":
Help yourself! Everything, except for the steak, has grown in the dacha and is now growing on my fragrant windowsill.
