Tomato Red Guard: a mysterious hybrid that leaves questions

Among the many modern varieties of tomatoes, there are recognized favorites of most gardeners. There are those who do not have a long future. And there are varieties with ambiguous characteristics that receive conflicting reviews. The latter include the little-known hybrid Red Guard F1.

The history of growing tomato varieties Red Guard

The existence of the Red Guard hybrid is questioned by many gardeners. At least, there is no entry in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation about him. At the same time, the seeds of such a tomato have been sold by the well-known company "Uralsky Dachnik" for several years. But many varieties of this company cause conflicting feelings among experienced gardeners: with aggressive advertising, accompanied by a mass of epithets, the reality turns out to be by no means what one would expect after studying the labels.

It is impossible to establish for certain the fact that the Red Guard tomato was bred in Chelyabinsk: various facts do not confirm this. But, apparently, such a hybrid still exists, although there are very few reviews about it, and the very first are dated 2015. The versions that the seeds of the Red Army or Red Guard varieties registered in the State Register are sold under this name are broken when studying the description of all three.

So, the Krasnogvardeets tomato was registered in 2010. It is described as a mid-early determinant salad variety with cylindrical red fruits. Already the shape of the fruit suggests that the Red Guard, described as a variety with rounded fruits, is not a Red Guard. The Red Army tomato, registered in 2018, resembles the considered hybrid in the shape and size of the fruits, shows high yields, appears to be determinant and early ripe. But in the advertisement for Uralsky Dachnik, the Red Guard tomato is positioned as ultra-early ripening and super-determinant! Therefore, it should be considered as an independent hybrid.

At the same time, advertising of this variety must be treated very carefully. Yes, in fact, a sane gardener will not be able to do otherwise, having read the words on the packaging: "The ultra-early maturity of this hybrid will amaze the imagination of even inveterate skeptics! ... Incredible early maturity goes hand in hand with abundant fruiting!", As well as many similar ones. The managers of "Uralsky Dachnik" are great experts in using the epithets "most popular", "newest", "unique", "premium seeds", etc. At the same time, for a few seeds of this hybrid, and others, they charge up to 100 rubles.

The company's specialists know a lot about advertising

Description of the Red Guard variety

Comparing the description of the variety from the manufacturer and data from the available literature, it can be judged that the hybrid belongs to determinant plants that do not require pinching, but need to be tied due to the large number of rather large fruits. At the same time, having written about the uselessness of pinching, the manufacturer recommends keeping a bush of 1-3 stems. The manufacturer does not indicate the height of the bush; based on other descriptions, it does not exceed 80 cm. The branchiness of the bush is moderate, the foliage is strong.

The Red Guard is a brush-type tomato, in the cluster there are from 7 to 9 fruits weighing about 200 g. They have a rounded shape with a slight degree of ribbing, are colored scarlet-red, the surface of the tomatoes is shiny. The pulp is dense, fleshy, the number of seeds is small.

Characteristics of the tomato variety Red Guard

The variety is one of the earliest ripening varieties. There is information that under normal conditions in the open field, it begins to bear fruit at the end of June, in a greenhouse - in the first half of the month. Fruiting is extended, lasts until autumn. It normally tolerates low light conditions, has a complex resistance to diseases and sudden cold snaps. Fruits are not exposed to cracking. The yield is average: 3-4 kg of tomatoes are harvested from a bush, about 12 kg from a square meter of planting.

The fruits, like most hybrids, are perfectly shaped.

The taste of tomatoes is sweet and sour, it is considered excellent, the main purpose is fresh consumption. The excess harvest can be processed into juice and various sauces, and the smallest fruits can be preserved as a whole. Tomatoes tolerate transportation well and have a satisfactory keeping quality.

The advantages of the Red Guard tomato include:

  • high disease resistance;
  • adaptability to abrupt changes in weather conditions;
  • early maturity;
  • ease of care;
  • great taste;
  • versatility of use;
  • transportability.

It is difficult to name obvious shortcomings so far, but the mystery inherent in the hybrid, the fact that it has not passed state tests, and its seeds are available only upon request in online stores, leave doubts that the variety will take root well in our beds, withstand competition with the newest varieties that honestly passed all the mandatory procedures.

Growing tomatoes Red Guard

Ultra-ripe tomatoes can be grown without seedlings, but to get a harvest in June, seedlings must be prepared. Seeds in boxes can be sown at the very end of March or early April. There are no problems with caring for seedlings of such varieties: it does not stretch, does not require additional feeding. But you should not forget to harden the seedlings before planting in the garden.

Seedlings of determinate tomatoes usually grow very strong

To use a greenhouse for tomato Red Guard is only in the north and in the cold regions of Siberia and the Urals. Bushes are planted according to the scheme 50 x 60 cm.When planting in well-fertilized soil, you can do without top dressing. Water this tomato as needed, depending on the weather: until the beginning of the reddening of the fruits, the soil should be moderately moist, subsequently drying is possible.

The conflicting recommendations on the formation of a bush, apparently, should be combined as follows. All stepchildren that grow below the first flower brush should be removed, and those located above can not be touched. In warm climates, the growth of the bush can be allowed to take its course, in cold climates, no more than three stems can be formed. Tying the stems is highly desirable; if it is not carried out, it is necessary to mulch the bed with a layer of clean hay or chopped straw.

Reviews of gardeners about tomatoes Red Guard

The Red Guard is a tomato with many questions. Information about him is scarce, and advertising from the manufacturer is too intrusive. Apparently, it will take several more years for everything to fall into place, and gardeners have accumulated sufficient experience in growing this hybrid.

This ultra-early variety of tomatoes was created by breeders of the Gavrish agricultural company in 1988 and in 2001 was registered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements for cultivation in all regions of Russia. Judging by the reviews of gardeners, Boni MM is more often grown in the regions of the middle zone, Siberia, the Urals and the Far East.

Boni MM can be grown both in the open field and in greenhouses, but, in my opinion, it is unprofitable to occupy valuable greenhouse areas for it. For early harvests, it is quite possible to do with tunnel greenhouses covered with spunbond in arcs. Moreover, after harvesting an early harvest, the beds can be used to grow daikon, black radish, greens, etc.

Fruits ripen within 83-88 days after full shoots appear. The declared yield is 5.5-6.5 kg / m 2. Some seed producers write on the packaging about two kilograms from each bush, but this is clearly an overestimated characteristic. In this case (according to most reviews), the State Register's information is more accurate and even somewhat underestimated, because with a dense planting of 10-12 plants per square meter, you can get up to 10 kg of tomatoes from it.

Appearance

Determinate bushes, standard, low (plant height is usually 40-45 cm, maximum - up to 50 cm). The plant is medium-branched, does not need pinching. The foliage is medium, the leaves are small, dark green. The inflorescences are simple, they are laid above the sixth - seventh leaf and further without separation.

Tomato varieties are called determinant, the growth of the stems of which is limited by the formation of flower brushes on their tops. And about the standard varieties of tomatoes, you can find out from our article - Standard tomatoes: why do gardeners love them?

Fruit characteristics

Fruits are heterogeneous - from medium to small. The mass of one tomato is 58-63 grams (some seed producers claim large sizes, but this is refuted by gardeners' reviews). The shape of the tomatoes is flat, slightly ribbed. The color of unripe tomatoes is green with a dark green spot at the stalk. Ripe fruits have the usual red color for tomatoes.

The shape of the Boney MM tomatoes is flat, slightly ribbed, the color is red

The taste of tomatoes is good, the skin is thin, the flesh is dense. If the fruits are not removed for a long time, then they may crack. Their purpose is mainly salad, but some gardeners successfully canned these tomatoes as a whole.

Advantages and disadvantages, features, differences from other varieties

The main difference between the Boni MM tomato and other varieties, which is decisive when choosing it for planting, is its ultra-early maturity. We list other advantages of this tomato:

  • compact bushes that do not require garters and pinching
  • immunity to late blight and other cultural diseases
  • resistance to adverse conditions and temperature extremes
  • amicable ripening of fruits (the whole crop is harvested in two weeks, after which the garden bed can be used to grow other crops)
  • good keeping quality and transportability, due to which the variety may be of commercial interest.
  • The possibility of growing indoors and on balconies.

  • small fruits
  • exactingness to soil fertility.

Description of the variety

Today, the line of tomatoes with this name includes three varieties, differing in size and color of the fruit. Tomato "Klusha" is the first one obtained as a result of painstaking work of famous Novosibirsk breeders T.N. Postnikova and V.N.Dederko.

In addition to him, the line includes:

  • "Golden knuckle"
  • "Super nagger".

The seeds are sold through the Siberian Garden agricultural company.

N. Postnikova and V. Dederko are also the originators of tomato varieties: "Monomakh's hat", "Alsou", "business lady" and many others.

Low, medium-early tomatoes fell in love with gardeners in different regions of Russia. The varieties "Klusha" and the "Super Klusha" tomato are registered in the catalog of the State Register of the Russian Federation (2007 and 2015), "Golden Klusha" is considered a novelty (see video).

Standard bushes of tomatoes are distinguished by a massive thick stem, resistance. Leaves of medium size, rich green color. Plants are compact, well leafy.

At the stage of formation and ripening of tomatoes, the leaves completely cover the fruits, they are almost invisible. That is why the variety received such an original name, tomatoes - like chickens hidden under the dense foliage of a "brood hen".

Chunky bushes do not need support, pinching, and require minimal maintenance. They grow well in compacted plantings on ridges, in boxes, pots and flowerpots on balconies.

Growing a hybrid

Since this is an early standard variety, it should be sown for seedlings no earlier than a month before planting in the ground, for greenhouses 3-4 weeks earlier. The exact timing depends on the region of cultivation.

For the southern regions, the method of sowing seeds directly into the ground is also relevant - then fruiting will drag on until the first frost, and unripe fruits can be put on ripening or make a salad of green tomatoes for the winter.

Seedlings are stocky, compact, slightly stretched out in low light. In this case, it is recommended to bury it in the soil up to the lower leaves.

In the process of growing seedlings, it must be fed at least 2 times with liquid complex fertilizer according to the instructions.

For better growth of the bushes, a week after planting, the bushes must be treated with a yeast solution or humate over the leaves. During the growing season, 3-4 additional dressings are required. During flowering and pouring of fruits - with a predominance of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers - nitroammophos, for example, or urea. But it is very dosed - an excess of nitrogen causes fattening of the bushes to the detriment of the setting of the crop.

From the middle of summer, it is necessary to switch to potassium fertilizers (potassium sulfate) - they contribute to the ripening of tomatoes and serve as protection against fungal diseases. Plants respond very well to processing with an ash solution, as well as an infusion of weeds.

Regular watering is an important condition for obtaining a full harvest. For summer residents who rarely appear in the garden, the best solution would be to mulch the beds - with a layer of up to 10 cm. This can be mowed grass, straw, sawdust (they should be generously sprinkled with a solution of urea).

Mulch will not only retain moisture, but also the air permeability of the soil, weeds will not be able to germinate and take away nutrients. And mulching also prevents soil particles from falling on the lower part of the leaves during rain or watering. And this is an effective prevention of many diseases. By the way, the Krasnaya Gvardiya variety can be grown on good mulch, just like the Dachnik variety, and without a garter to the pegs - in spread. This is convenient for small farms.

Description and characteristics of the variety

The Dachnik variety was bred thanks to the efforts of the employees of the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing. The main goal was to obtain a tomato that can show high productivity in unfavorable climatic conditions and at the same time be resistant to common crop diseases.

The result obtained fully met expectations. And the confirmed varietal characteristics as a result of tests made it possible to add the variety to the State Register in 1999. This tomato is recommended to be grown in the North Caucasus region in unprotected soil. However, judging by the reviews of gardeners who planted it, the tomato shows good productivity in the central and northern regions.

The leaves are standard, their size is medium, the shade of the plates is green. The inflorescences are simple, the stalks are articulated. The first fruit cluster grows over 5-6 leaves, and then after 2. 4-8 tomatoes are formed on each of them.

The root system of the Summer resident is superficial, the diameter of its growth is 15-20 cm. Thanks to this feature, tomatoes can be planted at a close distance, namely 7-8 pcs. for 1 sq. m. without fear that they will compete for moisture and food.

According to the characteristics and description, the Dachnik variety is early maturing. Ripening of the first tomatoes occurs 96-105 days after germination. The fruiting period is 2-3 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Summer resident tomatoes have a flat-round shape. When fully ripe, they become a uniform red hue, which can be seen in the photo. In the process of growth, a light spot is present in the area of the stalk, but subsequently it completely disappears. The taste of the fruit is sweetish with a characteristic sourness. They have a pleasant tomato flavor.

The pulp is juicy, fleshy, medium density. There are more than 4 seed chambers inside a tomato. The skin is thin, dense. When eaten, it is practically not felt. Average weight of 1 tomato is 55-110 g. Tomatoes do not crumble when ripe.

The yield of the variety is 3.8-4.2 kg per bush. The fruit set at the Summer Resident occurs regardless of weather conditions, which explains its stable yield. The yield of marketable tomatoes is 74-100%. The summer resident easily tolerates transportation and long-term storage for 1 month. at a temperature of +7 degrees.

According to the description, summer resident tomatoes are recommended to be consumed fresh. They can also be used to make summer salads in combination with herbs. Many gardeners claim that the Summer Resident can also be used to obtain sauce, juice, assorted vegetables.

The main characteristics of tomatoes (per 100 g of product):

  • sugar content - 3.3%
  • concentration of dry substances - 5.6%
  • ascorbic acid - 17.1 mg.

RASPBERRY: THE BEST VARIETIES from Ivan Kazakov and Viktor Kichina

Owner of a luxurious raspberry garden in the Ryazan region, Victor Mikhailovich Fadyukov talks about the best varieties of raspberries for the middle lane - the selection of Ivan Vasilievich Kazakov and Viktor Valerianovich Kichina.

My estate is a museum of modern gardening. I am not engaged in business, it involves the production of a certain product according to a template, rather art, collecting.

Choosing a candidate raspberries in new varieties is equal to the choice of a painting for a museum. In terms of emotional impact, a good variety is no less impressive than the "Black Square".

But why surprise - pictures and raspberries create geniuses!

«Everything that is impossible must be done, ”Jules Verne believed. I live by this principle. I have been working with raspberries for 15 years. Many of its newest varieties went for a walk in Russia from my garden.

They came to me in the rank of hybrids, were evaluated, received sonorous names. To work with raspberries, you need to know everything about her.

This knowledge can be obtained only in one case - to be special, close to the author, Doctor of Science Viktor Valerianovich Kichin, from whom he tried to find out all his secrets.

Annual raspberries: varieties of Kazakov

There is such a term “annual raspberry". He is good in that he informs that one summer passes from the shoots of such raspberries to the harvest. It takes two seasons for regular raspberries.

Knowing that Ivan Vasilyevich Kazakov bred excellent annual varieties, I avoided him, fearing to become a "servant" of two doctors of sciences at once. The raspberry issue turned out to be political. But one day I did not manage to dodge, and Kazakov offered to take his hybrids "for education".

It was inconvenient to refuse a great scientist, and seven seedlings moved to my garden.

What seedling? In human terms, this is a disabled person: out of millions of roots, only a few remain, out of billions of root hairs - often not a single one, they are at the very front edge of the root system, but there are still consumers for the remaining supply of the seedling - stem buds with offspring. According to OST 10 208-97, a raspberry seedling with a root length of 10 cm is ready for a full-fledged revival. Not every gardener can cope with such happiness.

Michurin brought luxurious bouquets of new varieties of raspberries to the anniversary. I showed it to the author, agreed on the names of varieties, began to think about where to put the bouquets so that scientists could see them. Then the show was held at the exhibition "Gardener and Farmer".

Again everyone groaned and gasped in delight at our stand. Well, we are delighted that they are delighted. At the next session of the Academy, Kazakov was elected an academician in the first round. She is such a raspberry - it raises the status of everyone in love with her.

"Kind people! If my delight could sound, it would fill these pages with a deafening roar ”(Vladimir Nabokov). Still - the berries of this raspberry are up to 12 g! This is 12 grams of happiness! This is unprecedented, which has never happened! In forest raspberries, berries are 0.2-0.5 g, in garden raspberries, up to 3.5 g. How do they call the Cossack miracle varieties?

‘Red Guard’ charmed with all its qualities: it blooms in June, the first berries ripen in early August. The first layers are ready right there - babies give birth to babies! The reproductive rate is fantastic - more than 100. The Red Guard is approaching the model of an "ideal remontant variety", which includes more than 20 economic and biological traits.

‘White Guard’ - champion of creamy golden varieties in taste, size (up to 8 grams), ripening speed of berries, does not creep.

‘Chief Marshal’. Once a marshal, then the berries are bombs, the grandson calls him a bomb carrier. Up to 12 grams!

‘Favorite’. Everything is loved in it: taste, size, yield, brilliant appearance of berries, drupes barely perceptible by the tongue.

In 2007, due to the drought, my vegetable garden seemed to have moved to the extreme south of Russia, and large-fruited varieties were left without a crop, but annuals helped out.

Annual raspberry - a berry for a special purpose! She surprises and delights with a fantastic harvest. With these varieties, a real annual raspberry... Everything in them is perfect, with them the pinnacle of the world crimson quality has emerged.

In taste, size of berries, yield, it surpassed ordinary raspberries and invades the "territory" of large-fruited varieties. She made a revolution in the garden, refuting the proverb: "After Pimen-Marina (August 20), do not look for raspberries in the forest", extended the period of consumption of raspberries to 100 days, until October 20.

She does not need trellises, the harvest ripens at an inopportune, more expensive time, the "life" of the berries is longer, leaving is minimal. How can one not flourish here?

Raspberries - miniature pharmacy, natural Viagra, love berry. Nature has not invented anything sweeter, healthier, safer. Divine berries create heavenly pleasure in the body and a blissful state in the soul. The Raspberry Garden is a real field of miracles!

Divide raspberries into 4 groups: ordinary, large-fruited, standard and annual (remontant).

The beauty is very good, but not from our century. This is me about common raspberries... In this carriage of the past, as Ostap Bender used to say, you won't go far.

The most unusual varieties of ordinary ones with berries up to 4 g: ‘Novost Kuzmina’, ‘Early Sweet’, ‘Sweet,’, ‘Malakhovka’, ‘Shosha’, ‘Caprice of the Gods’, ‘Sorceress’, ‘Balm’.

Some of these beauties with the scent of love, great taste and excellent harvest are over 100 years old.

For a long time, the breeders could not escape from the modest size: the weight of the berries froze at the level of 4 g, the yield from the bush did not exceed 2 kg. They could neither impress nor surprise progressive gardeners. At the end of the last millennium, quite unexpectedly, happiness fell on lovers of goodies all over the world - giant raspberries.

Perhaps a ray of light, either from the sun, or from some other star, hit exactly the heart of the genome of a raspberry bush, turning the gene for the size of berries from ordinary to large-fruited in it. Raspberries turned out to be low, thick, with giant berries. Mutations often occur in nature, but they are not always noticed and fixed, previously there was not enough knowledge.

We were lucky, a wise breeder passed by the bush. Raspberry delighted him, he decided to consolidate and strengthen her dignity. And the wonders of the world have increased. Once I went with a sprig of ‘Maroseyki’ to a reputable institution. An employee ran by, and she exclaimed: "These are your tomatoes!" I liked the error.

I corrected it a little, added the word larger and received an advertising slogan - "Raspberries are larger than tomatoes!"

Raspberries: varieties of Viktor Kichina

V. V. Kichina large raspberries tamed him to Russian life. In 1979 he received the first wonderful varieties: ‘Maroseyka’, ‘Mirage’, ‘Stolichnaya’. These varieties can be as large as you like: each treatment will give at least a 10% increase in berry size and yield.

The varieties are named for a reason. Once upon a time there was a raspberry hybrid with a dull inventory number K89. But he created fantastic berries, the impression of them is like a Mercedes. How to name? I tried on the name 'Caprice of the Gods'.

They scolded: "Why dedicated to some gods, I would name them in honor of Russia."

One guest (from the people), kneeling in front of a raspberry bush, exclaimed: “Oh, what pride! What a beauty! " and immediately created two names: ‘Pride of Russia’ and ‘Beauty of Russia '.

The K89 hybrid looked more dignified than the others, it got the first name. It was at the time when pseudo-Western names were imposed on us-dummy: ‘Wimm-Bill-Damm’, ‘Le Monty’, ‘Tom Klein’. And they forgot the Russian letters. Malina was read the name 'Impeachment'.

Let the neighbor be jealous - he doesn't have that. In the garden of Dr. Kichina you will not have time to get used to good things, the best appears. Thoughtful: the qualities of K89 do not quite correspond to my ideas about Russia: a little sour, crooked, prickly and "ugly" too big.

For Russia, such qualities are not desirable, for the generalissimo they will come down. Save the glorious name for the best of the best. K89 from 'Pride of Russia' demoted to ‘Generalissimos’, but he did not lose respect for him. Fold two boxes of matches flat to get a model of a berry.

You can't throw such a berry into your mouth, you have to bite off. Their size is 1.5 times larger than the berries of the recognized champion ‘Taganka’ from its 23 g. It is possible that some of you will grow berries from your mobile phone.

In the history of mankind there were seven generalissimo, among the raspberries, he will forever remain the only one.

Pride of Russia 'and' Beauty of Russia’- super heavyweight varieties! In everything! From the weight of the berries to the price. They bear the features of an ideal variety, at least at this stage of human development: there is nothing to improve. ‘Pride of Russia’ will give you a lot of pride in our country.

Standard raspberry varieties called crimson trees. Not fair. By thickness, hardness ‘Tarusu’ it is more correct to compare it with steel scrap. She has no equal in slenderness, elegance, figure. If she didn’t even produce large berries, she should still have allocated a place of honor in the garden: plant and just admire.

‘Arbat’: on each fruit branch there are 25 berries, with an average weight of a berry of 5 g, a hundred square meters will give as many berries as a goby will not grow meat from a whole hectare. The variety is wonderful in every way.

It is impossible to refrain from enthusiastic words when describing the variety ‘Abundant’... Its fruit branches have 4 orders of branching, which leads to a quadrupling of the harvest of large-fruited berries. The ovary is plentiful, like flowering dill. Not for poor land and lazy care.

'Patricia' perfect as ‘Arbat’, but lays more fruit buds. This is the cultivar of the future, the ideal of the amateur gardener and gardener-farmer.

‘Divine’. Why such a name? They would ask me at the time of ripening of the first berries. They say that the first impression is the most correct.

'Just lovely'. There is no other name for the variety. The taste and size of the berries, the size of the harvest and the ease of collection will make the owner fall in love with this miracle of selection thought and not look "to the left" for a long time. Nobody else has this. You will never confuse him with anything.

"It's time to go North."Raspberries require 1600 degrees of vegetative temperatures for normal development.

An isotherm of this amount of heat passes through the gardens of Petrozavodsk, Vologda, Kirov, Perm, Khanty-Mansiysk, Nizhnevartovsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Chita, Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

It is grown in Syktyvkar, Severodvinsk and even in Kandalaksha, 50 km north of the Arctic Circle, 200 km from the shores of the Arctic Ocean. The local raspberry breeders add the warmth of their hands to the natural warmth.
