When choosing a grape variety, many gardeners dream of finding one that would have all the positive characteristics at once. And often, in search of the ideal variety, new products are ignored. But in vain. Many new hybrid forms are capable of giving odds to common varieties. Among such promising novelties, the Harlequin is a bright handsome man with sweet dark pink berries.
The hybrid form of the Harlequin grape was obtained by crossing the varieties known and loved by many winegrowers - Talisman and Hadji Murat. The best qualities of the parent varieties - disease resistance, frost resistance, good yield, high sugar content, large clusters - have become the hallmark of the Harlequin, along with the beautiful dark pink color of the berries. The author of the variety is the famous Russian breeder Sergei Eduardovich Gusev.

Sergey Eduardovich took up viticulture in the 90s. He bought and rented abandoned dachas in the Dubovsky district of the Volgograd region and in 20 years collected 3 hectares of land on which his collection of grapes, one of the largest in Russia, was located - more than 200 varieties of Russian and foreign selection. Gradually, the grower himself became interested in breeding work. Sergey Gusev admits that he dreams of breeding a good variety himself, stable, with large and beautiful tasty berries. In this regard, there is already a result: the grower has selected several dozen hybrid forms, rather large and stable. At the beginning of 2018, the breeder's website describes 63 author's hybrid forms, including Harlequin - pink table grapes with large bunches and berries.
Harlequin is an early-medium ripening variety (from 125 to 130 days). Harlequin's own-rooted bushes have high vigor. The shoots of the variety ripen well. The plant has bisexual flowers. The good rooting of cuttings of the hybrid form in the school should also be noted.
Harlequin clusters are large, their average weight reaches 600–800 g, rather dense, cylindrical-conical with a pronounced wing. The yield of the hybrid form is high. Large dark pink berries reach a weight of 10–12 g, their average size is 30x27 mm. The berries are crispy, juicy, have a pleasant, harmonious taste, and are characterized by a high sugar content (22%). According to the results of the tasting assessment, carried out in August 2014, the Harlequin received 8.7 points. This is a very high assessment, not all known and widespread varieties can boast of such high taste indicators.
Large clusters with dark pink berries will become a real garden decoration
The variety is resistant to fungal diseases. Frost resistance - up to -24aboutFROM.
Harlequin is a relatively new hybrid form, the grapes have not yet received wide distribution, but they have already earned positive reviews.
In the climate of the Volgograd region, where the Harlequin was bred, it grows well and does not require additional care. The main thing is to plant the plant correctly and in the right place, properly care for the vine, normalize the bush and carry out preventive spraying to prevent fungal diseases.
When growing a hybrid form of Harlequin, it is enough to follow the standard rules for planting and caring for table grapes. And knowing some of the characteristics of the variety and caring for the bush, taking into account these features, will be an additional plus and help to grow a high-quality and bountiful harvest.
In the course of breeding, about 90% of varieties are usually discarded, only the best get the right to life. But whether they will become in demand by gardeners and winegrowers, or will remain only in the breeder's collection, depends on many factors. The resistance of the variety to diseases, frost resistance, yield, consumer qualities of berries - everything must be up to par for the new variety to take its rightful place among the many varieties already known and loved by winegrowers. The hybrid form of Harlequin has every chance of success and, perhaps, every year its dark pink clusters will decorate more and more gardens and vineyards.
